An explosion in the fermenting section of the Guinness Brewery in Dublin, causes substantial damage to the plant and sends debris into the surrounding streets.

The early morning blast was heard miles away. Three workers were taken to hospital with minor injuries and five units of the fire-brigade were called to the scene.

Surrounding streets were covered with debris and parts of the thirty ton CO2 tanks were found hundreds of metres away. Commercial workplaces were damaged and the impact was felt in nearby houses and at at Traveller camp.

We all got very badly terrified. We thought it was the end of the world to be honest about it.

A resident of nearby Pim Street described hearing a

Rumble of thunder and then there was a second explosion which we saw, and something landed in the yard facing us… and all barrels went 50 foot up in the air.

Gardaí are probing the scene but the cause of the blast is not clear. The cost of damage is not known but Guinness say there will be no interruption to supplies of stout.
