An explosion tore a hole in the side of factory in a quiet town near Rochdale.

Emergency services rushed to a manufacturing plant on Todmorden Road, Littleborough, at around 6pm on Wednesday evening.

Shutters were blown off the building and the roof partially collapsed from the force of the blast.

Debris was also thrown across the yard outside.

Five ambulances, two police cars and two fire engines attended the scene.

Thankfully no-one was injured in the explosion, a fire service spokesman said.

It is understood that gases coming from a piece of machinery built up inside the building and caused the incident.

Firefighters at the scene said: “The explosion has made part of the roof and building structurally unsafe.”

Crews worked into the night to make the area safe.

Many residents nearby were terrified by the loud bang and many felt their houses shake.

One woman, who didn’t want to be named, said: “I was cleaning up and heard this almighty bang and the whole building shook. I didn’t know what it was. A lot of people came out of their houses to see what was going on.

“No-one could believe what had happened.”

Another resident said: “I was sat watching television and all of a sudden the house just shook. I thought it was an earthquake or something. It was a strange feeling. I was concerned really as no-one knew what it was.”

“I’ve been out and seen the building. It doesn’t look good at all. It’s incredibly lucky that nobody was injured.”

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 6.05pm to reports of an explosion on Todmorden Road, Littleborough. Two fire engines and three support vehicles attended the incident.

“Crews worked into the night to ensure the building and surrounding area was safe. Investigators are still ongoing.”
